FORESTS - IL PRIMO - SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017
The pine scented air feels warm and still. Under the
canopy the light is fugitive and mysterious until the
sun creates shafts of colour streaming between tall
trunks and lending a divine atmosphere to the scene. I
feel I'm in a cathedral until birdsong breaks the silence
and brings back a sense of reality. This moment is all
there is. This lace fills up my senses; as the song tells.
The trees are mostly cedars, and some ancient stumps
show that once they must have been giant. No clear-
cutting here, for some stumps are as tall as I am and
some worn down by time to knee high size. There are
balsam as well and hemlock, and of course pine - the
king of the forest in this part of the country.
The ground is fine needle/leaf mulch, mostly a pink
colour though there are areas of green moss where a
small clearing has been created.
Further on a ring of orange catches my eye and I'm
delighted to spot the bright bits of chanterelles half-
hidden by pine needles and scenting the air with
apricot perfume. It is late in the year.....but it has rained
much this summer and along with boletus and
countless other fungi they dot the forest floor as bright
little treasures amid the brown/red/pink earth.
